Reporting Live – Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire
The Super Eagles will square up against Cameroon in the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday.
Nigeria are one of the last 16 teams remaining at the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations being held in Côte d’Ivoire.
The Super Eagles have qualified as group runners-up from Group A, having taken seven points from their three games, behind group winners Equatorial Guinea only on goal difference.
In the group stages, they shared a 1-1 draw against the group toppers before beating both hosts Côte d’Ivoire and then Guinea-Bissau 1-0.
Their opponents will be the Group C runners-up Cameroon.
Cameroon on Tuesday night made a superb comeback in their last Group C match against The Gambia and as it was the night before, the last three minutes proved dramatic. Cameroon, trailing 2-1 came back from the brink of elimination to snatch a 3-2 win.
Equal on points with Guinea who lost the corresponding match, 2-0 to runaway leaders, Senegal, Cameroon got the edge on account of having scored more goals in the group.
It is the eighth time both Nigeria and Cameroon will be meeting in the history of the competition. They first met at the final match 40 years ago. They met again at the group stage at Maroc ‘88 and again for the title fight.
The last time both teams met at the Round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations was in 2019 in Egypt where the Super Eagles knocked out the Indomitable Lions 3-2 to advance to the quarter-final.
The Round of 16 clash will hold on Saturday, January 27 by 9pm (Nigerian time) at Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.
