With 20 days to the resumption of the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers recuperating Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi could make his return to the Super Eagles squad for the Matchday 3 game against Guinea Bissau.
Three-time African champions, Nigeria welcome their West African neighbours to the Abiola Stadium in Abuja on March 24 where they will be aiming at stretching their lead at the top of Group A, following their victories over Sao Tome & Principe and Sierra Leone.
It was cherry news for Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro who is set to announce his roster for the qualifying matches with Guinea-Bissau, and indeed fans of Awoniyi after the Head Coach of Nottingham Forest Steve Cooper provided a positive injury update on the injured Nigerian.
Awoniyi has been on the sidelines since he picked up a knock in the club’s lone goal victory against Southampton at the Saint Mary’s.
Cooper dropped the hint ahead of Nottingham Forest’s game against Everton at the City Ground today, “Taiwo Awoniyi is making good progress, he’s out on the grass and back running. He’s not with the team yet and isn’t kicking any balls, but he’s making progress which is positive for him.”
Awoniyi has been a key motivator for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, since joining from German Bundesliga side Union Berlin, as he has scored four goals in 16 matches for the newly-promoted side.
