The Super Eagles secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by defeating Cameroon 2-0 on Saturday night.

Nigeria’s initial attempt in the 4th minute saw Victor Osimhen’s header saved by Fabrice Ondoa from Ola Aina’s throw. Semi Ajayi’s rebound shot that hit the right post was ruled out after VAR consultation.

Nigeria took the lead in the 36th minute as Osimhen dispossessed Oumar Gonzalez, passing to Ademola Lookman, whose powerful shot found the net. Despite Cameroon’s attempts to equalize before halftime, Nigeria’s defense stood firm.

In the second half, a waived penalty for Nigeria and a blow to goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s injury marked key moments. However, Alex Iwobi missed a chance before Calvin Bassey assisted Lookman, who doubled the lead at the end of regulation time.

Despite Aina’s and Iwobi’s late opportunities, the final chance was cleared by Cameroon’s Jean-Charles Castelletto. The Super Eagles will now face Angola in the quarterfinals, who advanced after defeating Namibia.
