Mikel Arteta and Erling Haaland have won the Premier League Manager and Player of the Month award for August 2022, Abbeylivenetwork.com reports.
The duo from Arsenal FC and Manchester City clinched the prizes respectively after a wonderful outing in the month of August.
While Arteta led his North London side to a five-match winning start in the league, Haaland scored nine times in five games as Guardiola’s men began their title defence.
Arteta saw off competition from Tottenham’s Antonio Conte; Pep Guardiola of Manchester City, Everton’s Marco Silva, and new Chelsea boss Graham Potter who was formerly of Brighton and Hove Albion.
“We won all five of our August fixtures, scoring 13 goals and conceding only four in the process. Our manager led us to victory against Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Bournemouth, Fulham, and Aston Villa, finishing the month top of the table,” the Arsenal FC wrote after the Spaniard scooped the prize.
“Mikel is our second manager to win his opening five games of a Premier League season. Arsene Wenger achieved this record in two successive seasons during our Invincibles era of 2003/04.”
Meanwhile, Haaland, who joined City from Borussia Dortmund, beat competition from Arsenal duo Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard as well as Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic among others to win the award.
According to Opta, only former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has scored more goals in a single month in the Premier League, with 10 goals in Dec. 2013.
“I am delighted to win this award for the first time – it was an incredible start of the season for the team and I am grateful to everyone who voted,” Haaland said in a statement.
“We all wanted to hit the ground running this season, so winning four games out of five was a great start for us in what is the most challenging competition in the world. I am happy to have played my part by scoring goals.
“Hopefully, I can continue to support the team … and carry on our strong start to the season.”
City are second in the league standings after six games with 14 points, one behind leaders Arsenal. They will travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
