Despite their resilient, Nigeria’s Rivers United was able to get the better of the defending champions USM Algiers of Algiers.
The first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup was held at the Goodswill Akpabio stadium and the game was keenly contested between both sides.
The Pride of Rivers dominated the early part of the game and their efforts were rewarded in the 10th minute with a strike from Augustine Okejpha.
Since getting the goal, the host wasted numerous chances to increase their tally.
The Algerians decided to keep the ball and denied Rivers United the opportunity to control the match.
The second half seemed more difficult for both sides but the USM Algiers’s backline nullified all the attacking threats of the host as the game ended 1-0.
The African Super Cup champions will host the second leg in Algiers and the winner over both legs will reach the semi-final of tournament.
