Quarter-final draw facts

Ajax (NED) v Juventus (ITA)

1996 final highlights

  • A repeat of the 1996 final, won by the Italian club on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Rome.
  • Head-to-head in UEFA competition: 6 Juventus wins, 2 Ajax wins, 4 draws

Liverpool (ENG) v Porto (POR)

Highlights: Porto 0-5 Liverpool

  • Liverpool overcame Porto 5-0 on aggregate in last season’s round of 16, all the goals coming in the first leg in Portugal – Sadio Mané scoring a hat-trick.
  • Head-to-head in UEFA competition: 3 Liverpool wins, 0 Porto wins, 3 draws

Tottenham (ENG) v Manchester City (ENG)

  • This is the first time Tottenham and Manchester City have locked horns in UEFA competition.
  • City were 1-0 winners away to Spurs in the Premier League on 29 October. The return game in Manchester is scheduled for 20 April.
  • There has been nothing between the sides in domestic football over the years. In 156 competitive meetings, City have won 61 to Spurs’ 60, with 35 draws.

Barcelona (ESP) v Manchester United (ENG)

  • This tie has been switched, with the first leg at Old Trafford, because Manchester City and Manchester United are not able to play at home on the same night, nor on consecutive nights, following a decision made by the relevant local authorities.

2011 final highlights

  • Barcelona beat Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League final in both 2009 and 2011, Lionel Messi scoring in either game.
  • Barcelona and United have met in two other two-legged contests in UEFA competition; the English club overturned a 2-0 first-leg loss in Spain with a 3-0 Old Trafford victory in the 1983/84 European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-finals, and beat Barcelona 1-0 on aggregate in the 2007/08 semi-finals.
  • Head-to-head in UEFA competition: 4 Barcelona wins, 3 United wins, 4 draws

It was an open draw: there were no seeds, and teams could play a club from their group or any side from their own association. Former Brazil goalkeeper Júlio César, a UEFA Champions League winner with Internazionale in 2010, selected the balls.
