Nigeria’s Under-17 Female team Flamingos have sealed a spot in the quarterfinals of the India 2022 Under-17 Women’s World Cup after they beat Chile in their final group B game, Abbeylivenetwork.com reports.
The Flamingos put pressure on the Chileans and it paid off in the 4th minute when captain on the day, Blessing Emmanuel’s low drive found the bottom left corner of the net from a pass by Opeyemi Ajakaye.
The attacking pair of Ajakaye and Amina Bello continued their torment of the South Americans and it almost became 2-0 in the 19th minute when Ajakaye’s press almost saw her nick a goal as goalkeeper Catalina Alvarado hesitated in clearing the ball from a back pass.
With 24 minutes played on the clock, the Flamingos’ trio of Taiwo Afolabi, Tumininu Adeshina and Ajakaye combined to trouble the defence of Chile but Ajakaye’s shot was saved by the keeper.
Four minutes later, the Chilean keeper dropped a clanger when put under pressure by Bello but the latter’s header was tame and cleared. However, Ajakaye who crossed the ball initially into the box was then flagged offside.
The duo of Bello and Emmanuel were booked in the first half by Italian referee Maria Ferreiri.
The Flamingos missed a good chance to score the second goal in the 67th minute but they passed the ball rather too long a time which afforded the Chileans the chance to clear their lines.
Bisola Mosaku then made it 2-0 in the 82nd minute with a great finish.
The South Americans restored some hopes through the penalty scored by Tali Rovner after VAR ruled that Omamuzo Edafe handled the ball inside the box.
Meanwhile, in other group game leaders Germany humbled New Zealand 3-1.
