The seventh edition of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals begin in India on Tuesday, with Nigeria’s U17 girls, Flamingos saddled with one of the hardest nuts to crack, Germany, as their first opponents, Abbeylivenetwork.com reports.
Nigeria pictured a storied history by apperaing in five of the previous six editions and making it to the quarterfinals stage thrice in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
Flamingos did not qualify for Uruguay 2018, with Ghana, Cameroon, and South Africa representing the black continent.
The 2020 edition of the World Cup was cancelled after the global outbreak of the coronavirus.
Head-to-head
On the strength of that, the reigning European champions will be the favourites against the Nigerians.
A win for the Flamingoes will, however, set them up for a deep run at the Mundial.
Nigeria must avoid the quicksands that sucked them in way back in their last appearance in 2016, when they lost 0-1 to Brazil, drew with England and then got trashed by eventual champions North Korea to crash out at group stage.
It will be an opportunity for flamingos to start with best team and best tactics, and be vigilant to utilize opportunities and possibilities that present themselves within the 90 minutes.
