Rangers have suffered a blow in their bid to sign Cyriel Dessers with reports in Italy suggesting the forward has turned down a move to Glasgow today, Abbeylivenetwork.com scooped.

The Cremonese forward was a top target for Michael Beale and he hoped to get him snapped up before Rangers return for pre-season training.

But the 28-year-old is believed to prefer a move back to Serie A and would rather stay in Italy than move to Scotland this summer.

Rangers have been strongly linked with Dessers and had tabled an initial bid to Cremonese but fell short of his £7 million valuation.

The Light Blues manager Michael Beale had identified him as a potential replacement for the departed Alfredo Morelos despite completing the signing of Sam Lammers from Sampdoria.

According to Italian news hub, Tuttosport, the Nigeria international has attracted the interest of the Turin club.

Dessers is keen to leave Cremonese this summer following the club’s relegation from Serie A.

Cremonese paid Genk €7m for Dessers last summer and are demanding same fee from potential suitors.

The former Eredivisie top scorer could only manage 7 goals and two assists in 29 appearances in all competitions last season.
