The joint bid by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania has won the race for the hosting rights of the host of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Abbeylivenetwork.com reports.
The Executive Committee board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the news today in Cairo, Egypt.
Senegal, Botswana, and Egypt are vying to host the 2027 AFCON, while Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have also launched a joint bid for the tournament.
It is the first time any of the three East African countries will be hosting the continent’s biggest single-sport tournament, and none of them has ever won it.
In contrast, Nigeria hosted and won it in 1980 and co-hosted in 2000 with Ghana, when the Super Eagles reached the final but lost on penalties to Cameroon in Lagos.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe celebrated the news saying that the “future of African football has never been brighter.”
He also suggested that an African nation will win the World Cup in the near future.
