The Premier League summer transfer window is now open ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, with the expectation of another big-spending market from the world’s richest league, Abbeylivenetwork.com reports.
The 2022 summer transfer window saw the Premier League spend a world record amount on new signings.
The January 2023 transfer window proved to be just as exciting in the Premier League, given the incredible wealth football’s richest league boasts. Indeed, the Premier League blitzed the rest of Europe, spending more than double on its own than the rest of Europe’s big five leagues combined.
In January, Chelsea broke their own record – which they set in the summer of 2022 – for the biggest spending spree in any transfer window in the history of football.
The 2023 summer transfer window, which opened on 14 June, is certain to be every bit as crazy, with Premier League clubs already spending obscene amounts of cash.
The first big transfer of the summer was confirmed at the start of May as Brighton paid £30 million for Watford attacker Joao Pedro. They also snapped up veteran James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud on a free transfer from Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund, respectively.
Liverpool announced the £35m signing of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton in an impressive coup for the Anfield side.
Meanwhile, the first major free transfer of the summer in the Premier League was unveiled by Aston Villa as they captured Youri Tielemans on a Bosman deal from relegated Leicester after his contract expired.
Chelsea saw club legend N’Golo Kante leave on a free transfer for the riches in Saudi Arabia. He will soon be followed there by some other Chelsea players, including Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy. Wolves have also sold Ruben Neves to Saudi side Al Hilal in a deal worth £47m.
Arsenal have completed the signing of Kai Havertz from Chelsea for £65m. Declan Rice will follow from West Ham for £100m plus £5m in add-ons.
Across north London, Tottenham have spent heavily on Leicester midfielder James Maddison and Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, as well as making Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski’s deals permanent.
Champions Man City released Benjamin Mendy on a free transfer and are expected for a big turnover of players this summer.
Bournemouth started the summer well with the arrivals of Hamed Junior Traore (on a permanent deal from Sassuolo) and Justin Kluivert from Roma.
One player that Premier League clubs have missed out on, though, is Jude Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund. He moved for a fee that could rise as high as €134 million. Liverpool had been particularly interested in the England international before considering that the fee – the fourth biggest in history – was too high.
