According to reports monitored on Soccerex claims Uefa are looking to take soccer showpiece to the US.
UEFA are apparently in talks about hosting the Champions League final in New York, according to a senior rights holder.
Jaumes Roures, chief executive of Spanish broadcaster Mediapro, says discussions are taking place over moving European club soccer’s showpiece event outside the continent for the first time.
“Talks are ongoing investigating the feasibility of hosting a future Champions League final in New York City,” Roures told Catalunya Radio’s ‘El Mati’ show.
As a competition broadcaster Mediapro, which holds the rights to the Champions League in Spain but distributes it to domestic telecommunications firm Telefonica, would be informed on matters regarding the final host.
The 2019 final is set to be played at Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano with the 2020 edition hosted at the Atatürk Stadium, Istanbul, meaning the earliest that a New York final could feasibly take place is 2021.
The 2021 final venue is expected to be announced in June 2019 with host applications to be submitted by late October.
Should the Champions League final head Stateside it would come in the wake of a controversial La Liga decision to host a Spanish top-flight match in the US for the first time this season, with Girona’s home game against Barcelona the proposed pick for a Miami match.
Roures added that the philosophy behind the step from Uefa shares the same philosophy as that La Liga decision to stage Girona’s clash with Barcelona in Miami in January 2019.
“Despite there being a financial benefit for Girona, the club will also be subject to massive exposure and being the centre of the world”, Roures added.
