Burkina Faso’s U-17 men’s national team, the Young Stallions, have been crowned champions of the 2024 WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup of Nations.
They secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in a thrilling final held at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra on Tuesday (28 May).
This victory marks a significant improvement for the Young Stallions compared to their 2022 campaign, where they finished runners-up in the same tournament. Back then, they were defeated by eventual champions Nigeria.
The match saw Côte d’Ivoire dominate possession in the first half, showcasing their technical prowess.
However, it was Burkina Faso’s forward, Asharaf Tapsoba, who stole the show with a well-executed goal in the 27th minute.
The Ivorians responded swiftly, with Mohammed Diarra’s shot deflecting into the net just three minutes later, sending both teams into the break level at 1-1.
Burkina Faso emerged from the half-time break with renewed determination. Tapsoba continued his impressive performance, latching onto a perfectly timed through ball just five minutes into the second half and firing it home to restore his side’s lead.
Despite Côte d’Ivoire’s relentless attacks in search of an equaliser, Burkina Faso held firm.
Cherif Aboubacar Sawadogo sealed the victory for the Young Stallions with a crucial third goal in the dying minutes of the game, sparking jubilant celebrations amongst the team.
This win not only secures Burkina Faso the WAFU Zone B U-17 title but also guarantees them a coveted spot at the upcoming 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
