Nigeria open their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign against Olympic gold medallists Canada on Friday 21 July in Melbourne, Australia.

The Super Falcons who are still looking for their first World Cup title in six tournament appearances, are in Group B alongside Canada, co-hosts Australia and newcomers Republic of Ireland. Nigeria’s best showing at the World Cup to date is reaching the quarter-finals in 1999.

The West Africans have already played Canada twice in two previous World Cups. Their first encounter at the 1995 edition ended 3-3 while Nigeria won their second match-up 16 years later 1-0.

Nigeria, one of the four African squads playing in this year’s tournament alongside Zambia, South Africa and Morocco, face Australia on 27 July and the Republic of Ireland four days later. Both matches will be played in Brisbane.

10 players from the 2019 squad are in Australia. They include five-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala of FC Barcelona, and legendary Onome Ebi who has featured at each World Cup since 2003.
